FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Statement from Chancellor Betty A. Rosa, the Board of Regents and Interim Commissioner Shannon Tahoe on SCOTUS DACA Decision
Today we celebrate the Supreme Court’s decision on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) with the Dreamers of New York, who have seen their rights reaffirmed by the highest court in the land. Now, though, is not the time to become complacent. The fight must continue to ensure that DACA recipients have a permanent pathway to citizenship, and the Board of Regents and State Education Department remain committed to that fight.
The effort to end DACA flies in the face of everything that America stands for – equality, hard work, and a level playing field for all. Dreamers, brought to America as children, want nothing more than to continue giving back and contributing as productive, hard-working, tax-paying members of our communities. Many of these young Dreamers live in daily fear that they may lose their jobs, be forced to drop out of college or even be deported to countries they may not even remember. This is the only country many of them have ever known; this is their America.
We will continue to stand steadfast with our Dreamers, to support the movement to ensure that they never face this uncertainty again. It is the right thing to do. We have the moral responsibility to seek real, transformational change for these young people, our fellow Americans.
