Statement From Chancellor Betty A. Rosa, the Board of Regents and Interim Commissioner Shannon Tahoe

The Trump Administration’s directive requiring international students who are enrolled in online programs to depart the country or seek alternative measures to enroll in in-person learning opportunities is an ignorant and cruel blow to students that come to our country each year in search of opportunities and success. The very idea that our federal government would intentionally add to the burden of students navigating school and a global health crisis is a complete contradiction of the principles this country was founded on.

New York has long welcomed people seeking a part of the American dream, Lady Liberty stands in our harbor and we celebrate what she stands for. The Board of Regents and the Department are committed to ensuring all students have equitable access to a quality education, which includes students that come to our state from another country. When these ideals are attacked it only strengthens our resolve, and we will continue to fight for equality.
