Statement From Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr., the Board of Regents and Commissioner Betty A. Rosa on the Lunar New Year

Today we wish New York’s Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and all who celebrate, a happy new year. This Lunar New Year ushers in the Year of the Tiger, an animal that symbolizes power, courage, confidence, leadership, and strength – traits that will serve us well as we face the many challenges ahead.

As we join our friends in celebrating the Lunar New Year, it is vitally important to remember that our cultural differences are a source of strength, not weakness. New York is strong – not in spite of our differences, but because of them. To facilitate conversations about tolerance and acceptance, the Board of Regents and the Education Department are seeking additional multiethnic resources that will highlight the shared experiences of Asian Americans.

We wish all who celebrate heath, happiness, and prosperity in the New Year ahead.
